Updated: Feb 2

More serene and just 25 minutes drive from its big sister Brighton, Worthing is renowned for being a family-friendly town with plenty to do..with a lovely beach.

In this article, we'll take a leisurely stroll along the beach and address some common concerns about cleanliness, safety, and the perfect beach experience. So, let's kick off our shoes and embrace Worthing's warm and reassuring coastal vibe!

Does Worthing Have a Nice Beach?

Worthing Beach, a gem along the West Sussex coastline, is a place I've come to adore for its serene beauty and inviting atmosphere. It stretches over five miles, lined with charming palm trees, and offers a picturesque promenade that's perfect for leisurely strolls. The beach itself is a blend of sand and pebbles, creating a unique landscape that appeals to both sunbathers and walkers alike.

One of the most striking features of Worthing Beach is its cleanliness and well-maintained environment. The local council and community take great pride in preserving the beach's natural beauty, ensuring it remains a welcoming spot for all visitors. The greenery and floral arrangements along the promenade add a touch of colour and life, making every visit a delightful experience.

For families and individuals alike, Worthing Beach offers a range of activities. From skating along the promenade to enjoying a picnic on the beach, there's something for everyone. The Lido and the new splash point are particularly popular among children, providing fun and safe water activities.

As a frequent visitor, I've always found Worthing Beach to be more than just a place to relax; it's a community hub where people come together to enjoy the simple pleasures of seaside life. Whether you're looking to unwind by the sea or engage in fun activities, Worthing Beach is a destination that won't disappoint.

The long beach in the lovely seaside town of Worthing stretches for 7 miles and has been recognised as one of the best beaches in the country after winning the coveted Seaside Award for the 3rd year running. Overseen by Keep Britain Tidy, the honour identifies and rewards beaches achieving the highest standards of beach management and water quality.

Is the Sea Safe in Worthing?

Swimming in the sparkling sea is a popular activity at Worthing Beach. While there is no lifeguard service, worry not! The shallow waters between the groynes offer a safe and inviting space for a refreshing dip. For those new to sea swimming, staying close to the shore where you can stand is a great idea. And remember, swimming with friends or family not only adds to the fun but also ensures everyone looks out for each other.

Worthing beach has won the special Seaside Award for the 6th year running for having the highest standards of beach management. The water quality based on the last few years is classed as good. On a daily basis from 1st May-30th September the coastal office is contacted by the environmental agency to let them know if there is a chance of reduced water quality. Pollution risk forecasts are made every day at this stretch of the coast so you can have peace of mind before taking a dip! Forecasts for this location are currently based on rain, tide, time and wind.

Does Worthing Have a Sandy Beach?

Worthing Beach is known for its gentle slope and a delightful mix of shingle, soft sand and rock pools. As the tide moves in, you'll find small sandy areas amidst the pebbles, creating cosy spots for relaxation. During low tide, the beach reveals enchanting rock pools, perfect for curious kids to explore. So, grab a beach blanket, buckets and spades and a crab bucket from the Souvenir shop by The Lido and relish the calm seaside vibe of Worthing Beach.

Equipped for Sea Adventures in Worthing

Before you dive into the sea, make sure you're properly equipped. Consider using a tow float to increase visibility. If you are someone who finds the temperature of British waters a challenge, kit yourself out with some neoprene gloves, shoes, or socks that can protect your extremities from the cool water. For even more coverage, or if you are going paddle boarding or indulging in other watersports on offer in Worthing, don a wetsuit that not only keeps you warm but also provides extra buoyancy. When you emerge from the sea, change into some warm clothes and have a hot drink!

When Is The Best Time to Swim in Worthing Sea?

Knowing about tides and weather is super important when you head to the beach for some fun. Even in the summer, the ocean waters can be delightfully cool, so take your time to get used to it. It's a good idea to pay attention to the wind situation, because strong winds blowing from the shore can create wavy waters. Get to know when the tide comes in and goes out, and try to avoid high tide when the waves crash onto the shore, making it a bit tricky to get in and out of the water. Generally, it's safer to swim around 2 to 3 hours before or after high tide. You can check tide times here https://www.tidetimes.org.uk/worthing-tide-times

What do the Beach Safety Flags Mean on Worthing Beach?

A heads up about the beach safety flags at Worthing Beach! They're there to help you out and keep you safe. When you spot that red flag waving, it means there's some danger lurking in the water, so it's best to steer clear and avoid taking a dip. And if you see that orange windsock hanging around, it means there are offshore winds blowing, which makes it not so great for using inflatables. Remember, your safety is super important, so make sure to follow the guidance given by these flags.
